The White Mayde of Avenel
is inspired by Winifred Sandys’ miniature painting of the same name.
The White Mayde of Avenel is a spectral being who haunts castle Avenel in Sir Walter Scott’s “The Monastery.” Although Winifred Sandys’ miniature painting is a copy of her father’s work by the same name, the artist has transformed his chalk drawing on paper to a small gleaming watercolor whose translucency is enhanced by the smoothness of the vellum. This tiny work is a masterpiece in it's own right.
