Mary Magdalene
Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Mary Magdalene is inspired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s painting of the same name.
Rossetti's painting is full of symbolic reference. The spherical form she holds is an alabaster box that
contains the ointment with which she annointed Jesus’ feet. She was said to have dried his feet with her thick hair, shown here as a glorious golden red. Black Hellebore flowers, seen in the background, signify calumny or malicious defamation. Because of this, I wonder, was Rossetti depicting yet another "fallen" woman, or one he felt had been unjustly cast as such?
