(Delaware Art Museum)

Water Willow is inspired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s painting of the same name.
Rossetti’s Water Willow is a portrait of Jane Morris. In 1871 William Morris departed on a trip to Iceland, leaving Rossetti and his wife to spend the summer together. The resulting romantic bond between Rossetti and Jane Morris is suggested in numerous paintings for which she sat. The willow branch she holds is a symbol of sorrow. Kelmscott Manor appears in the background, making this painting a bittersweet commemorative of their time spent there.
